What to Look for in a Diamond

Choosing the right diamond involves understanding four crucial C's: color, clarity, cut, and carat. These factors determine the value and beauty of a diamond.

  • Diamond Color: Graded from D to Z, the most valuable diamonds have almost no hue. Color distinctions are made under controlled lighting.
  • Diamond Clarity: Clarity categories like flawless (FL), internally flawless (IF), very, very slightly included (VVS1 and VVS2), very slightly included (VS1 and VS2), slightly included (SI1 and SI2), and included (I1, I2, I3) determine the presence of flaws.
  • Diamond Cut: The cut grade affects how a diamond interacts with light. Shapes like oval, heart, pear, round, and marquise require precision to enhance brilliance.
  • Diamond Carat: The carat weight measures the diamond’s weight. One metric carat equals 200 milligrams. Diamonds over one carat are expressed in decimals.
  • Differences Between Old and Modern: Between modern and old European cuts, both are round cut diamonds, but the old European cut is more of a vintage cut from the 1920's/1930's. Old European gives off more colors in their sparkle. Modern round brilliant give more of a white sparkle.
